Star rookie Ojeda’s cheeky solution to start line struggles

But it could have been even better if not for a poor start that turned a sensational third on the grid into 10th by the end of the opening lap.

Ojeda lost ground off the line in each of the weekend’s three races and acknowledges starts as a key weakness amid an otherwise impressive progression.

The 26-year-old quipped on Sunday that PremiAir Racing team owner Peter Xiberras – a champion drag racer – could be the solution to his problems.

“I might have to get a few tips from Pete on how to launch a big horsepower car, because honestly the starts were what let me down this weekend, which is disappointing,” he said.

“We did the hard work in qualifying to put ourselves in a good position, but by the end of the opening lap we’d fallen outside the top 10, and that made things pretty tough from there.”

Ojeda paid tribute to race engineer Andrew Gilliam for going aggressive on strategy, pitting for the first time on Lap 8 to give the #31 Camaro clean air.

“The pit stops were super fast, the strategy was really sharp, and they gave me clean air to make the most of the pace we had in the car,” he said.

“Once we got into a rhythm, the car was seriously quick and we were able to fight our way back through to P6.

“To come away with my best Supercars result yet is pretty special, and I’m really stoked with the momentum and progress we’ve made across the weekend.

“There’s still plenty to work on, but it definitely feels like we’re heading in the right direction and I’m excited to get back out there next round.”

Xiberras said he was proud of the way the whole team executed the weekend.

Ojeda had been 10th and 14th in the Saturday races having been turned around by Chaz Mostert in the second encounter.

Teammate Declan Fraser had a difficult weekend, qualifying 22nd or worse for all three races and scoring a best race result of 16th.

“To see Jayden secure his best qualifying result and best race finish in Supercars shows the hard work everyone has been putting in behind the scenes,” said Xiberras

“The pit stops, strategy and execution across the weekend were outstanding, and it was great to see both cars showing really strong race pace.

“Declan also did a fantastic job fighting through the field and building momentum.”

Ojeda remains the best of the rookies in the championship standings in 14th, while Fraser is 18th.
